Visual Concept of Bolivian News

This map shows the nine departments of Bolivia. Each deparment has a prefect. This is superficially comparable to the American States and their governors. Four of the departments, those marked with a blue half moon, are referred to jointly as the Media Luna, or Half Moon. The Media Luna are currently in strong opposition to the current president, Evo Morales, and his political party, MAS — Movimiento al Socialismo, or Movement towards Socialism. Evo and the administrative capital of Bolivia are located in La Paz. Chuquisaca is the seat of Sucre,...

Call for Prayer

Please keep this in mind: We know of at least one specific missionary family living in Tarija, which is a different department/state in Bolivia, and one which is experiencing active violence. We heard word from them today that they are trapped. They are currently safe in their home. However! In their region, all roads are blockaded. The airport is closed. They cannot leave. Please pray for their continued security and basic provisions.

Cochabamba: Our Next Few Days

Posted by on Aug 11, 2008 in Activist, Explorer, Missionary, Observer | 2 comments

Bolivia, frankly, is batty. Is it any wonder I love it so? Yesterday’s election was a curious affair. The day was quite and calm. The evening, though, was a race of numbers in the news. Jim Shultz, a political blogger (strong left bias) based here in Cochabamba, has a good run-down of the election numbers released by the media last night. I’ve not found out how these numbers that were released were formed. I’m assuming exit polls; but while those are more or less reliable in the States, I see far less credibility for them here. The polling location near...

Irish Sovereignty: Rejection of the Lisbon Treaty

Posted by on Jun 13, 2008 in Activist, Observer | 0 comments

Excellent news from Ireland today… election results indicate that the referendum in the Republic of Ireland to approve or disapprove the Lisbon Treaty has resulted in a “no” vote: Ireland has rejected the treaty. Various articles both today and leading up to the referendum have included warnings that a “no” vote would “[trigger] a political crisis” which would lead to “much infighting and bickering across Europe”. Lobbyists for the Lisbon Treaty attempted to invoke poetic guilt by claiming that a denial of the treaty would...

Mafioso Gesture Tourette Syndrome

The Telegraph features an article by Casilda Grigg in which she is taught flirting techniques by a Sicilian.  Somehow I cannot picture Henry Tilney wiggling his fingers about in an invitation for caffeine. If Tilney cannot be seen doing such a thing, then surely the gesture is unnecessary for the rest of British men. The video is offered on the Telegraph’s...

Glutton for Punishment

I am a fool. A smart fool, but a fool nonetheless. I have willingly signed up for more classes. My GPA is right on the border. 3.745. If I take just one more class, I’m bumped up to Magna CL in the U.S., and firmly upper Second Class in the U.K. I was fine with settling with a 3.74 in order to JUST BE DONE. Until I was looking at my transcript and thinking, but, but, that 3.75 would be awfully pretty… so I decided, okay. One more class. Then I thought, hmm. If I take two more classes, then I can receive most of my normal scholarships and grants and so on. That’d...
