New Business Cards Have Arrived!
I wanted a fresh set of business cards for my trip to Washington D.C. next week, and I decided to try a new design. I wanted a vague focus that would apply to each of my present and potential jobs. I played with Boris Smus’ minimalist concept. My domain/twitter/email already fit the format. I originally wanted to leave it at just the email address with the @LorienJohnson in blue, but I decided at the end that since my website is the most important feature on the card I needed to sacrifice minimalism in order to make the URL explicit. I placed the order with Overnight Prints. Review:...

Take a look. New design. Not a single graphic serves as a structural or content element. Every piece is in type. I have additional bits of type-based elements I’m going to toss into the works, but – after midterms. I’ve oodles of bugs to work through with various nooks and crannies, and I need to reconstruct the archives and categories in full, but – after midterms. I’ve a midterm exam due tonight – two and a half hours on Old Testament history. This has been one of the most interesting courses I’ve had in a long time. I’m drafting up outlines...
Read MoreHope and Halloween
Western culture can often translate in strange ways when brought to Bolivia. Halloween, for instance. Tonight is the 3rd of November, and this is when Bolivia celebrates Halloween. I’m sure there’s a very sensible reason for this, and I’m just not in the know – even if it’s as simple as bumping it to Monday night lets us all have an extra night off of work. What does puzzle me is the horn honking. Cars are honking their horns like mad tonight, and for all I can tell they’re trying to honk “Jingle Bells”. Jingle Bells for Halloween. Meanwhile,...
Read MoreAnalysis of Bolivia and How Evo Could *Truly* Win
We heard some fascinating political and legal analysis on current events from a top-notch specialist in Bolivian law. I’m not naming him here simply because I didn’t get his express permission to do so. Kindly, deal with it. I’m posting the analysis, and then we can all go about researching it as we wish. Prior to the Ambush in the Pando, Evo expelled almost all of the press. That is a significantly contributing factor as to why we have so little visible evidence and sound accounts of what really happened. Earlier today on a radio station in Cochabamba it was announced that...

Steampunk Desktop Originally uploaded by vonslatt Jake Von Slatt, of the Steampunk Workshop (a new find for me), has posted a photo of his gorgeous desktop mods to his Flickr. The bulk of it is far too… gilded… for my tastes, but check out this keyboard. It’s stunning! A bit of googling was sufficient to show his project reports for his own creation, and even a fellow who is custom building (likely very expensive!) keyboards of a similar theme. I wants...

The 400-word edition of my open letter to the administration of Missouri State University was published as the Voice of the Day in the Springfield News-Leader on 1 May, 2007. The comments forum is of particular interest. On the whole, I'm quite displeased with the responses, both in support and in opposition – and not just here, but also on the livejournal threads which caused a bit of a stir. RE: The Opposition: Alrighty, what's the deal? I've been trumped in arguments countless times. Admittedly, not as often on the firearms issues, but even then I've had times...

I vote as a libertarian influenced by Hayek and Burke, and I think as an anarchist guided by the biblical principles of liberty. I have fenced foil in a diaper-suit and run for political office in a skirt-suit, but my shoes were always fabulous. Both dreadful politics and inspiring design are likely to make me teary.
